Company Profile

The Survey Research Groups' (SRG) Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) Unit operates within the California Department of Health Services' Cancer Surveillance Section.

SRG research specializes in conducting scientific health-related surveys relating to the health behaviors and lifestyle patterns related to chronic disease.

The SRG's CATI Unit has a 80-workstation capacity for interviewing and 12 silent monitoring stations for survey management. This capacity allows interviewers to work simultaneously on an unlimited number of projects at one time. The software that facilitates the interviewing process allows questionnaire design and sampling strategy to be tailored to the needs of each research project. For example, it is possible to randomly sample from the statewide California population or to sample from populations limited to smaller geographic areas. It is also possible to sample populations with special characteristics, such as women over the age of 40 or youth between the ages of 12 and 17. Furthermore, the SRG's CATI Unit has the in-house capacity to generate Waksberg-Mitosfsky method samples or straight RDD (random digit dial) samples. Samples purchased from commercial sampling firms can also be implemented with CATI technology.

Currently, SRG's CATI Unit has the capacity to conduct several thousand interviews per month. The Unit is available to conduct interviews 7 days a week, in all time zones. Furthermore, the CATI Unit is open from 9am to 9pm, PST, Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm, PST, Saturdays, and 12pm to 8pm, PST, Sundays. Approximately 40 percent of the interviewing staff and 70 percent of the supervisory staff are fluent Spanish speakers, and interviews can be conducted in Spanish as necessary. All interviewers receive training in general telephone survey techniques as well as in any special technical requirements of surveys implemented through the Unit.
